Going green and keeping cool

Here’s a story from ABC TV’s 7:30 WA last month. They talk to Michael Mobbs about the urban heat island effect and the kinds of things residents can do to green their streets. Then they head to downtown Freo, where they speak to residents who’ve taken matters into their own hands. Best of all, they speak to the local mayor, who encourages people to go ahead and not bother trying to get council permission.


If you haven’t come across Mobbs before, never fear – it’s not too late. He’s an urban sustainability dynamo, who’s written a detailed book about his inner-city Sydney eco-retrofit, and also devised a fascinating plan to transform his suburb, Chippendale, into a low-impact oasis. The Sydney City Council has put it on public display, and may yet adopt it…
